...and then discovered that it was recording in dual mono. Oops. That’ll be fine for the old Sinatra, but the other stuff will need to be re-recorded.
That’s what I get for not staying and listening to what was being recorded. I have an excuse - I’m running a 100 degree fever, I’m coughing up a lung and generally feel like crap.
It sure sounds better now. Some of these ancient records I’m doing for a co-worker, stuff that he found at a thrift store, are beat up and sound as bad as expected. But when I put on one of my perfect records I noticed the lack of stereo right away.
Oh well...

At some point please post a more complete description of your audio recording/processing chain including how records are cleaned. I see Audacity and not exactly a state of art setup on what appears to be an unsturdy rack with no vibration isolation or record press. My feeling is there are improvements that could be effected. :)
First get feeling better.

Yeah, we’re talking about a $5 turntable sitting on a TV tray and an old i7 that I use as my Plex server/DVR . I’m putting things on a 256GB USB 3.1 flash drive so I can take them to my other computer for editing. My Dual 1219 is locked up and needs a full overhaul as well as a new cartridge, so I have to use the turntable that’s operational. This is just a basic ‘ ge t ‘er done’ setup with whatever pieces I have laying around. I know that I have higher-end editing software, but Audacity does a pretty good job for 90+% of my needs, especially on this job.
It’s mostly for a co-worker that’s buying miscellaneous records at the Goodwill Outlet and just wants to hear them before reselling them. Most of them have typical scratches and smudges, and I should be able to fix some of the defects in Audacity. He makes a few bucks selling the records and I make a few bucks doing the recording and editing. In addition I get to listen to some old music I wouldn’t normally hear or buy.
I did buy a new stylus and Vinyl Buddy cleaning roller and everything sounds fine. I’m not going crazy like I used to, and that means not breaking out a black light to see every speck of dust. The co-worker in question is a bit younger than me; I think he was born the same year that I was a junior in college, so he’s young enough to be my own child . Maybe it’s a hipster thing, but he thinks that those clicks and pops are part of the vintage charm.

Mmmm, Sinatra on vinyl.
I hope you feel better soon. I’ve found that a good scotch is the best thing for an illness. It won’t make you better, but you won’t care.

Haha, thanks. I’m sure you could tell I was trying not to be critical while still pointing out there were irregularities. Deep down I was hoping for an ingenious ultrasonic clean/dry solution and a series of what appeared to be kludges at first glance. Or at least an OPPO worthy (bonkers overkill to highly dangerous) homemade static gun. $5 turntable for thrift store bin ‘ rumblers’ is not a bad choice.
Maybe if you get real bored you could try cleaning one side of an LP with wood glue.

For some reason I haven’t really had the desire to drink this year; I had a beer in February and that’s been it . Maybe it was the cancer and chemo , or maybe it was my drinking (and cigar smoking) buddy moving away. I’ve got plenty of good Bourbon and Scotch, including an 18-year old Glenlivet; th e similar vintage Maca llan went first. I just haven’t had a desire for a sip , even after the toughest days at work and seem content with tea (unsweetened) or sparkling water. Even soda, with the exception of the occasional ginger ale, has no interest to me. I don’t know what happened...

No worries. If I was working on my rare and immaculate records I’d find another method, and will save digitizing those for when the Dual is operational. For the task at hand this setup is probably more than sufficient.
I used to be a nutcase when it came to my turntable. Scales to measure tracking forces, having the platter balanced, the aforementioned black light, etc. In college I told my roommate that he could use any component in my stereo with the exception of the turntable - touch that and you die, simple as that. He liked to paint those little pewter Dungeons and Dragons figures, and to accommodate that we had a big-ass air compressor in the bathroom. One day I came home to find the cover off of my turntable, platter spinning around with a couple of his freshly-painted figures on it to air dry. How I managed to refrain myself from strangling him I’ll never know...

Just go with it. You’re better off.
